Morning Courses (8:30 – 11:30 a.m.)

The Foundations of Reading and Writing (Grades 1-3)

Entering Grades: 1-3

Course Description: We help young "spies" develop their secret (en)coding and (de)coding skills! This course covers early phonics and literacy skills including phonological awareness skills (LiPS), narrative skills (Story Grammar Marker), and other encoding and decoding skills (Orton Gillingham).

Musical Imaginings (Grades 1-3)

Entering Grades: 1-3

Course Description: Students learn pieces and create songs and instrumental accompaniments. Musical education for the young student has benefits not only for the development of artistic expression but also to develop and practice basic life skills. Students are actively involved in creative problem solving, decision making and working towards a common goal. Social skills including respect, poise, confidence, resilience, intrapersonal and interpersonal skills are developed through cooperation and collaboration. Students experience a great sense of accomplishment and joy at the conclusion of the program.

A Time for Yoga (Grades 3-5)

Entering Grades: 3-5

Course Description: Students will practice mindfulness through yoga, meditative art and music, exploring self-awareness and emotions through meditative practices of yoga, music and art.

Animation Domination – Ready, Set, Lego! (Grades 3-5)

Teacher: Pine Point teacher Gillian Crawford

Entering Grades: 3-5

Course Description: Let’s stimulate your imagination and creative skills as we take you through the exciting process of stop motion animation. Using Legos and other materials, each student will develop an idea, write a story, build a set, and bring to life an animated movie short. At the end of the 3 week session, the finale will consist of a film festival that will showcase each animator’s creation. Students will also receive a copy of their film short to take home.

Scientific Illustration & Nature Expressions (Recommended for ages 10-15)

Teacher: Pine Point teacher Maria Iacoi

Recommended For: students ages 10-15

Course Description: This course takes the students and their sketchbooks outdoors to explore, observe and collect living and nonliving specimens. We will work both out in the field and inside the art studio to do more observing, rendering and coloring of our findings.

Students will spend time learning to draw what they see accurately and shade and color with dimension and purpose. Time will also be spent looking at artists who use an expressionistic or modern approach to rendering nature. We will explore a variety of ways to create what we have seen and studied. Our class time will also focus on learning to draw and express the “feeling” of our collected findings as well as the landscapes, trees and plants our campus offers.

Afternoon Courses – 12:30 - 3:30 p.m.

Adventures in Imagination (Grades 1-5)

Course Description: Hands-on lessons in creative writing and art with the goal of creating a story comic book by the end of the semester.

Beginning Sewing (Grade 5 - Adult)

Teacher: Pine Point teacher Erin Call

Entering Grades: 5 through adult

Course Description: Students will learning basic sewing skills from hand sewing buttons to use of a machine. Students can complete simple projects of their choice including a pillow, pajama pants, tote bag, kitchen mitts, and a simple quilt.
