Students

A school community is only as good as the people who live and learn within it.

A youngster who is inquisitive, eager to work with others, motivated toward high achievement, and learns best when actively involved in his/her work will likely thrive at Pine Point.

Students at Pine Point are bright and eager to learn. Nearly two thirds of the students in grade levels we evaluate with standardized testing would qualify for The Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth program. Pine Point seeks to develop the excellence within each child.

Having effective communication skills as central to education, we begin work on creating the social environment conducive to learning, and teach phonemic awareness from kindergarten. Our overall language arts program produces strong readers and, in time, strong writers and speakers. The School's literary magazine, The Pine Quill, affords an opportunity for nearly all of our children to showcase their writing. In the upper grades, essays, poems, papers, and other forms of writing are publicly displayed continually for the community to digest and assess.

Students at Pine Point are strong math learners as well. Our math team has finished in Connecticut's top ten for the past two years. Mathematics is taught with a blend of arithmetic drilling and real life problem solving. Students can complete mathematics studies through Geometry and Algebra II.

Students at Pine Point also excel in the areas of language, with Spanish and French taught from kindergarten onward and Latin added beginning in sixth grade. Science learning abounds, from bird-banding to DNA profiling. The School has fully equipped laboratories, spacious natural space to make regular field investigations, and a rigorous program of study that brings the discipline of scientific inquiry alive.

Students at Pine Point are actively involved in the arts - dance, music, and fine art, physical education [a two season requirement of athletics in the upper grades], dramatic productions, service learning, and library/research/study skills. It is noteworthy that these are elements of every child's educational experience at Pine Point.

Unique in Southeast Connecticut, Pine Point is fortunate to educate a wide age of student: three year olds through freshmen in high school. Such a composition of learners enhances our youngsters' mutual respect for each other. Students support one another; the younger children looking up to their "heroes," and the "grown up" teens garnering a sense of responsibility for being a good role model. Both gain social confidence as part of their Pine Point education.
