Peace:  One Day

“Be the change you want to see in the world.”
-- Mahatma Gandhi

September 21, 2010 will be an exceptional day of learning and action at Pine Point School.

British filmmaker Jeremy Gilley documented his efforts to establish the first ever annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence with a fixed calendar date.  As a result of these efforts and with a unanimous vote United Nations member states adopted September 21 as an annual, international day of peace.  The UN signing ceremony for this effort took place on the morning of September 11, 2001, before being cruelly interrupted.  The documentary film Gilley produced was titled Peace: One Day.  In that same spirit, and inspired by his vision, Pine Point students will be joined by students from other schools and members of our community on September 21, 2010.

The day will begin at sunrise and continue past sunset, with various presentations, workshops, and activities scheduled for the entire community.  We seek to examine the complex concept of peace and view it from every angle: historically, sociologically, politically, spiritually, ideologically, militarily, personally, as well as intellectually. The day will be a multisensory experience!  At the end of the day, student teams will be required to establish an action plan for peace in their communities.
