In
December 2005, the Fiore family established a summer sabbatical program for the School’s teachers
and administrators. John and Barbara Fiore were involved at all levels of School
life during their daughter’s (Lauren ’96) seven years at Pine Point. The
sabbatical program is designed to strengthen the individual’s teaching while
also being personally fulfilling and energizing. Each fall the recipients
present their experiences at a gathering in the Library/Technology Center.
In the summer of 2006, Sally Cogan, Susan Kozel and Ham Salsich set off as the inaugural
Fiore Fellows. The 2007 Fiore Fellows were Chris Hurtgen, Carol Roper, and Lou
Toscano. In 2008, Steve Brown, Robin Rice, and Diane Corwin Seltzer ’67
respectively journeyed to Italy, Greece, and Crotia; Colombia; and Norway and Iceland to
nourish their personal and professional growth.
Now in its fourth year, this
year’s recipients embarked on very different journeys. David ’69 and Robin Smith
traveled to the north and south islands of New Zealand
while Carol Ansel took a course in
Digital Wildlife Photography at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. What each
had in common was the opportunity to pursue a personal passion, and, in
returning, finding themselves with a renewed commitment to teaching and
learning.
